It's not a big surprise that we are facing a men's mental health crisis. Societal pressures, such as needing to appear strong or brave, have been heaped on men for generations and it's leading many to breaking point.
Men talk about relationships breaking down, separation from children, job loss, addiction, lack of close friendships, loneliness and being unable to open up as reasons for this.
Not just for men, but social media can cause huge mental health problems. Social Media society tells us we must be fit, flash and fulfilled every waking hour.
Having grown up in the Armed Forces, the stiff upper lip and need to "get on with it" was well practised but didn't leave any space for emotions.
As men, we have typically hidden our thoughts, feelings and emotions for fear of being labelled weak or showing signs of weakness. The reality is this is pushing men to the very limit when perhaps they could instead learn to process things in a different way. There is so much stigma attached to men's mental health which quite frankly is wrong. I used to be one of those men who could not show weakness or emotion, struggled with forming strong and stable relationships, woke up with chronic anxiety and fear of feeling depressed that day. Mindfulness helped me, and now I want to help you.
I am running Men only courses for those who feel more comfortable being in the company of a group of like minded men. The course is very similar to the standard 8 week course but some areas are tailored to the needs of the group.
